The outcome -- strength, endurance, flexibility and overall improvement! To celebrate this accomplishment, the seniors were recognized at a ceremony where representatives from Dunwoody Village in Newtown Square treated them to a healthy lunch, dynabands and a basket of cheer! We are extremely proud to announce that our Center has earned the distinguished award of National Accreditation. Staff members, Center members, the Board of Directors and members of the community at large all came together to work toward this goal. This March, the Wayne Senior Center passed the rigorous process to become accredited by the National Institute of Senior Centers. This makes our Center one of only 161 accredited centers out of the 15,000 senior centers nationwide. What an accomplishment!
In order reach this distinction we had to attain the level of excellence in 9 key disciplines as measured by peer reviewers of national repute. Our Center was scrutinized in the areas of Purpose, Program Planning, Community, Records and Reports, Governance, Fiscal Management, Administration, Evaluation and Facility. We not only passed these stringent requirements, we received accolades for our fine work. A heartfelt thank you goes to all those who put in so much time and effort in reaching this important milestone.
"Today’s seniors are different than those in the past,” said Shapiro. “Going through the accreditation process gave us the opportunity to look hard at the programs we offer, the services seniors need now and those they are likely to need in the future. Our priorities are clearer as a result of going through the process and we have clear-cut plans for reaching the goals we set as part of the accreditation process. We know this will help us anticipate what programs seniors in the future will need."
Senior centers also serve as a resource for the entire community for information on aging, support for family caregivers, training professionals, lay leaders and students, and for developing innovative approaches to addressing aging issues.
As an integral part of the aging network, a senior center serves community needs, assists other agencies in serving older adults, and provides opportunities for older adults to develop their potential as individuals within the context of the entire community.
